For those of you who haven't seen this movie, go out and rent it now, now, NOW! This has rapidy become one of my all time favorite movies, and is definitely one of the best of 2008. The subtitles are a bit clunky, but it truly is good. And don't worry -- the vampirism and horror elements are way in the background, secondary elements; so don't pass it up because you don't like scary movies.
Um, no matter how much in the background the horror and vampire elements are, I'd still find myslef being put off because it's in that genre. Yuk! Still, glad you enjoyed it. I think you need to let it bubble and brew, sit and stew in your mind for a few years yet before you could claim it was one of your all-time favourite movies though. What say ye?
Hey Anthony, sorry for the late reply, and thanks for the posting! Knew I could count on you.
Really, the vampire/horror elements are so minimal I'd be willing to say that they're inconsequential. There are only a scant few scenes of blood or dread of the vampric kind. Not to say that it's not a dramatic movie, or that there is no tension -- it's just not so neatly pidgeon-holed into the "horror" category.
And I think I can call it one of my all time favorite movies without seeming too eager. I'll readily admit that a new movie could come in and knock Let The Right One In or some other movie from my favorites list anytime. Or even to say that it has simply expanded my list. Time and new experiences should alter anyone's perceptions or preferences!
Anyway, I never saw this in the theater, but apparently the DVD subtitles are vastly different (and worse!) than the original theatrical release. Magnolia Pictures, which distributed it, went with a different translation, but it didn't say why. They are rectifying it in future releases, so make sure to look for "English (Theatrical)" on the back of the box for subtitles. While I don't speak a lick of Swedish, as a translator myself the subtitles seemed a bit "clunky" and condensed, but I had no idea that they had been changed. Anyway, those interested can read more about it at http://www.avclub.com/articles/let-the-right-subtitles-back-in-with-a-caveat,25710/.
Thanks again for the comment, Anthony, and I hope to hear more from ya! Till then, rent the flick!
